Rat and guinea pig adoption fees have been raised to benefit the animals and the adopters.

Robyn’s Nest has raised adoption fees on rats to $60 and guinea pigs to $40.   We want to explain why we decided to make  this decision.   We have started spaying and neutering all of our rats and also spaying our guinea pigs.  This has significantly raised our cost of care for these little cuties, but we are dedicated to giving the animals in our rescue the very best veterinary care available.

Everyone who has ever had a pet rat probably knows how common it is for them to develop tumors.  They are generally mammary tumors (in males and females) and they will continue to grow until they inhibit normal movement and cause pain.  They have to be surgically removed or else they will eventually be the cause for euthanasia.  Most of these tumors are caused by hormones.  Spaying and neutering rats can eliminate this type of tumor growth, which can create a longer, healthier, happier life for your little rat buddies.  It will also save you money on mass removals!

Female guinea pigs can get ovarian cysts, mammary tumors, uterine cancer and infections just like dogs and cats.  Spaying them is recommended for this reason. (Neutering male guinea pigs does not have any health benefits).

We know that you can probably buy these animals cheaper elsewhere, but by adopting from us, you can feel confident you are getting a very healthy pet.                                                                                             Sincerely, Robyn
